If you have recently been in an automobile accident, you may be experiencing pain related to the collision. Even a minor fender bender can cause your head to move forward quickly, causing whiplash related injury.
What is whiplash?
Whiplash is when a sudden, jarring movement of the head is sustained. It can be forward, backward or even sideways in motion. This movement can cause misalignment of the spine and cause severe pain if left untreated. It can cause neck pain in addition to restricted movement.
What are the symptoms of whiplash?
If you are experiencing any of these indicators you may have had a whiplash injury.
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Shoulder or arm pain
- Reduced range of motion
- Blurred vision
- Low back pain
After an automobile accident it is important to seek out care of your chiropractor. Your Chiropractor will examine your spine as a whole. If a whiplash injury (or neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain etc.) is left untreated it can result in chronic or long term injury and pain. Whiplash injuries and the pain associated with them are not always felt immediately following. It is best to visit your chiropractor and have them examine your spine to ensure that there has been no trauma or injury.
What are my treatment options?
Using spinal manipulation to relieve neck pain will help provide relief from neck pain and muscle spasms caused by the whiplash. In the first stages of treatment your Chiropractor will work to reduce inflammation.
Heat and ice therapy
Using alternating ice and heat packs can help reduce pain in all areas whether your head, back, neck, etc.
Stretching the area of injury although painful is extremely important for long term improvement and healing. Always follow recommendations from your physicians, chiropractor, etc., so that you don’t cause unnecessary strain on the area. Movement and physical activity is usual a good thing.
What can I do to avoid whiplash injuries?
While whiplash can never be “prevented” there are measures you can take to reduce the changes of damage caused during an automobile accident. Always wear your seat belt and make sure your children are in the proper child seats, make sure your head rest is adjusted to the appropriate height for your size.
