Chiropractic treatment can help many people suffering from neck pain, back pain and other injuries or conditions. When the spine is out of alignment, many different issues can occur and cause discomfort. According to the American Chiropractic Association for the 5+ million people with scoliosis or curvature of the spine, a chiropractor can adjust the spine and improve your overall health.
What is Scoliosis?
Our spine is constantly fighting to stay in a straight line. However, a curvature develops occasionally due to poor posture and abnormal daily movement. If the curvature in your spine is more than 10 degrees it is called scoliosis. In most cases the cause of scoliosis cannot be specifically pinpointed, this is called idiopathic scoliosis. For functional scoliosis trauma, tumor, disease, poor posture or muscle spasms can lead to the condition.
What are the symptoms?
As children grow, it is important to watch their spines to make sure they aren’t developing a curvature. If you notice any warning signs, then be sure to schedule an exam with a doctor or chiropractor or get them checked regularly so they professionally can keep an eye on it. Here are some of the warning signs:
Shoulders are different heights
Head is not centered
The hip is raised and prominent
Rib cages are not level, waist appears uneven
Skin on the spine has changed
The body looked misaligned
You can see or feel asymmetry in the spine
Generally scoliosis does not cause pain in children or teens. If you or your child are experiencing these symptoms with back pain it is important to get checked as it could be indicating another problem. Adults may experience back pain and trouble breathing in severe cases.
How can Chiropractic help?
There are many pieces of chiropractic care that can improve the curvature of the spine and health of the patient.
Adjustments or spinal manipulation- can help realign the spine, take pressure off of the joints of the spine and pull it back into position. The muscles will loosen and will help your joints move as normal.
Posture- a chiropractor can recommend exercises and tips for improving your posture.
