Heart disease is the #1 killer in the U.S. and continues to affect millions of Americans daily.

What is cardiovascular disease?
Heart disease affects the heart and blood vessels and causes a multitude of problems in the body. Many times plaque builds up around the walls of the arteries influencing blood flow to the area. If a blood clot forms a heart attack or stroke can occur. Besides heart attack or stroke, other types of heart disease include heart failure, arrhythmia (abnormal heart beating) or heart valve problems.

What are risk factors?
Some of the risk factors are not controllable such as being of the male sex, older age, family history, and race. However making certain lifestyle changes can reduce your risk. These changes include:

What symptoms should I look for?

  • Pain and heaviness in the chest and left arm (more common in men)

  • Neck and upper back pain (more common in women)

  • Chest pain during exercise

  • Pain extending down both arms

  • Difficulty breathing/ shortness of breath

  • Fatigue

  • Weakness

  • Anxiety
